The Great Conjunction

On December 21, 2020, Jupiter and Saturn came unusually close together geometrically in a #planar fashion with an angular #differential of 1/10 of a degree of #inclination. Saturn is slightly farther from the Sun than Jupiter at 9.5 AU or Astronomical Units. Jupiter is 5.2 AU from the Sun. One AU equals 93,000,000 miles and is the relative distance between the Earth and the Sun.

Jupiter’s and Saturn’s moons are clearly visible as the two gas giants tango swing about each other, appearing to be gravitationally entangled. Although the planets #planar #delta was at an apparent #minute angular distance, the planets at closest approach remained nearly 1 billion kilometers (621,371,192 miles) apart in relative distance.

For comparison, Jupiter is slightly larger than Saturn. At 11 times the diameter of the Earth, it’s #volumetric capacity is 1,321 Earths. While Saturn, at 9 times the diameter of the Earth has a #volumetric capacity of 764 Earths. These size comparisons of Jupiter and Saturn to the Earth are trivial when one considers Jupiter and Saturn in relational size to the Sun. For example, the #volumetric capacities of Jupiter and Saturn to completely saturate the #volumetric capacity of the Sun are equivalent to 984 Jupiters and 1,704 Saturns.

Jupiter and Saturn have not come this close angularly since 1623, and a close angular pass between these two planets won’t happen again until the year 2080. Perhaps, if humanity would still be around on Earth in the year 7547, they would have the opportunity to witness Saturn pass directly behind Jupiter. However, the Great Conjunction of 7547 won’t ever happen to be witnessed because the Book of Revelation is speedily bringing this earthly civilization to a close.
